Bio:
One-year starter who had a breakout senior season halted by a season-ending foot injury. Had 25 tackles (7.5 for loss) and five sacks through seven games. Started seven games in 2015 with 29 tackles (six for loss) and two sacks. Made 16 tackles (two for loss) with two sacks as a sophomore.
Pos:
Undersized pass-rushing terror coming off a season-ending injury. Intense, chases the action hard and moves well in every direction of the field. Explosive, gets a lot of momentum off the edge and plays with tremendous balance. Uses his hands to protect himself, consistently penetrates the line of scrimmage and gives effort defending the run. Plays with a nasty attitude, attacks ball handlers and keeps his pads low to the ground. Effective coming out of a three-point stance or standing over tackle. Remains disciplined with assignments and does more than just mindlessly rush up the field.
Neg:
Easily disrupted from the action or engulfed by opponents. Stiff and mechanical the few times he’s been asked to pedal in reverse and make plays in space.
Analysis:
Mathis is undersized but intense and could line up as a designated pass rusher this fall if he plays well on special teams.
