Bio:
Four-year starter who led the team with 98 tackles (eight for loss) and added 1.5 sacks and one forced fumble in 2017. Finished second on the team with 88 tackles (five for loss) while intercepting one pass and forcing one fumble as a junior. Made 47 tackles (three for loss) with two interceptions in 2015. Totaled 78 tackles (three for loss) to rank second on the team and intercepted two passes as a redshirt freshman.
Pos:
Underrated middle linebacker who was consistently productive throughout his career. Breaks down well and flows to the action. Solid open-field tackler. Covers a good amount of area on the field, fires through the gaps in run defense and sells out to make plays. Instinctive, quickly locates the ball and effectively reads and diagnoses the action. Patient, efficient and takes proper angles.
Neg:
Small, handled at the point of attack and struggles getting off blocks. Lacks great pursuit speed and cannot cut off the corners from ball carriers.
Analysis:
Fernandez has been a consistent defender for the Wolfpack since his freshman season and was constantly around the action making positive plays. Size is a limiting factor, but he offers potential as a backup inside linebacker in a 3-4 alignment.
