Bio:
First-year starter at right tackle who played in all 12 games in 2017, starting nine. Made one start as a sixth offensive lineman as a junior. Missed the entire 2015 season after an offseason knee injury. Started three games at left tackle as a redshirt freshman.
Pos:
Once-highly rated tackle prospect whose development was slowed by a devastating knee injury in 2015. Large, sets with a wide base and stays square. Patient in pass protection, effectively uses his hands to ride defenders from their angles of attack and works to block with leverage. Keeps his feet moving, keeps his head on a swivel and shows quickness.
Neg:
Lacks footwork. Off balance sliding his feet and shows a lot of stiffness in his game. Slow to the second level and rumbles around the field.
Analysis:
After the 2015 season, scouts rated Jones-Smith as the top NFL prospect on a Pittsburgh line which included Adam Bisnowaty and Dorian Johnson, two players presently on NFL rosters. His knee injury in 2016 changed everything, and Jones-Smith did not come back as the same lineman. He offers solid size and football intelligence and works hard but has limited upside and may struggle passing NFL exams.
