Bio:
Three-year starter who set a career high with 63 tackles in 2017 while adding an interception and seven pass breakups. Had 59 tackles (four for loss), two interceptions and nine PBUs as a junior. Earned First Team All-AAC honors in 2015 after his eight interceptions tied for second in the nation. Started five games as a true freshman and made 22 tackles.
Pos:
One-time highly rated prospect whose career has been in a tailspin the past two seasons. Athletic, plays much faster than his 40 time and shows an explosive closing burst to the action. Engages receivers at the line of scrimmage, plays physical football and wraps up tackling. Stays with assignments and showed tremendous ball skills early in his career.
Neg:
Gets lost on passing downs. Slow finding the ball, does not show good route recognition and does too much face guarding. Often a half-step late arriving to the action.
Analysis:
After his sophomore season in 2015, I graded Summers as a potential third-round pick based on his splendid play. Since then, he’s regressed on the field and shows little in the way of confidence or the ability to make plays when the ball is in the air. During Shrine Game practices, Summers looked tremendous in drills but was beaten during full scrimmage, which leads me to believe it’s all in his head. He possesses the physical skills and previously showed ability, so Summers should at least get consideration for a practice squad spot this fall.
