Versatile, somewhat elusive ball carrier with potential as a situational runner and third-down specialist at the next level. Terrific pass catcher out of the backfield who adjusts to the errant throw and makes the reception away from his frame. Displays terrific quickness in the initial 10 yards, effectively uses blocks and weaves through the traffic. Makes defenders miss in space, displays some shake and bake in his running and is a dangerous open-field ball carrier. Creates his own yardage. Displays good blocking vision, squares into opponents and gives effort.
Not a strong back and easily gets brought down at the point by the first defender. Knocked off balance by the initial hit.
Mathers was not graded by scouts entering the season but turned in a terrific senior campaign then looked effective during the week of practice at the Shrine Game. He’s a situational ball carrier that’s also effective catching the ball out of the backfield and offers potential as a third-down specialist.
