Pos:
Underrated cornerback with the size and skill to consistently see action at the next level. Instinctive, picks up assignments extremely well and shows good route recognition in zone coverage. Quick, explosive and stays on the receiver’s hip out of breaks. Aggressive, physically beats down opponents to defend the throw and willingly defends the run. Solid open-field tackler who brings ball carriers down at the point of attack. Displays good timing on pass defenses, has a burst to the ball out of his plant and gives effort in all areas.
Neg:
Long speed is a concern. Can be exploited downfield. Generally had average ball production in college.
Analysis:
Despite taking a backseat to injured teammate Blessuan Austin at Rutgers, Wharton was a terrific cornerback in his own right. His length, instincts and ball skills as well as his physicality will appeal to a variety of coaches this April. Wharton offers the ability to play in a variety of systems and can be a productive corner as a rookie in the NFL.
