Bio:
irst-year starter who spent two seasons at Indiana after transferring from junior college. Named Honorable Mention All-Big Ten and caught 25 passes for 376 yards and five touchdowns in 2017. Made three receptions for 28 yards as a junior
Pos:
Unheralded junior-college transfer coming off a terrific senior campaign. Athletic, explosive and displays potential as both a blocker and a pass catcher. Breaks down well, plays with solid fundamentals and easily moves about the field. Explosive at the point of attack, stays square and rides defenders from the action in blocking situations. Works blocks and plays through the whistle. Adjusts to errant passes and makes receptions in stride and looks the ball into his hands. Displays hand-eye coordination and makes difficult, over-the-shoulder receptions downfield with defenders draped on him.
Neg:
Lacks a quick release off the line of scrimmage into pass routes. Displayed inconsistency catching passes at the Senior Bowl.
Analysis:
Thomas was not rated by scouts coming into the season but showed enough ability throughout 2017 to get notice as a next-level prospect. He possesses the size, athleticism and versatility to develop into a three-down tight end but may need time before he’s NFL-ready.
