Bio:
Two-year starter who earned First Team All-SEC honors and caught 44 passes for 559 yards and two touchdowns as a junior. Made 48 receptions for 616 yards and one score in 2016. Started one game as a true freshman and posted eight catches for 106 yards after walking on at South Carolina. Played Minor League baseball after being drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2012.
Pos:
Athletic tight end with a well-rounded game. Intelligent, plays heads-up football and is always on the same page as his quarterback. Fires off the snap into blocks, displays outstanding vision and gives effort. Explosive at the point and keeps his feet and hands active throughout the action. Fluidly releases into pass routes, effectively times receptions and shows outstanding hand-eye coordination. Fights with his hands to separate from defenders and settles into the open spot of the defense. Adjusts to errant throws and shows soft hands. Shows focus and concentration as a pass catcher, comes away with difficult catches and wins out in battles. Keeps plays in bounds after the catch to pick up positive yardage.
Neg:
Gives effort as a blocker but shows marginal strength at the point and rarely gets movement. Lacks footwork in pass protection. Does not show a second gear or deep burst. Overaged and will be a 25-year-old rookie in the NFL.
Analysis:
Hurst is physically and mentally mature and stands out in all areas of the game but is exceptional in none. He should quickly produce at the next level, but Hurst may never be a dynamic or overly productive NFL tight end.
