Pos:
Short, explosive defensive tackle who gets the most from his ability. Plays with tremendous pad level, immediately gets his hands up and effectively uses them to protect himself. Displays good change of direction, moves well laterally and displays solid speed in lateral pursuit. Stout at the point of attack, consistently draws double-team blocks and possesses a tremendous first step off the snap.
Neg:
Often controlled at the point of attack by a single opponent. Lack of height is an issue, as opponents easily block down on him. Average pass rusher.
Analysis:
Gaines is a scheme-specific defender best suited as a three-technique tackle. He may never be a starter, but his intensity and explosiveness could help him have a long NFL career as a backup.
