Bio:
Three-year starter who earned First Team All-AAC honors in each of his final two seasons with the Tigers. Led the AAC and tied for fifth in FBS with 22 tackles for loss and tied for second in the conference with 8.5 sacks in 2017, adding 80 tackles. Made 81 tackles (11 for loss) with five sacks, two forced fumbles and two interceptions as a junior. Started seven games in 2015, posting 53 tackles (6.5 for loss) and three sacks before missing the final two games with a wrist injury. Had five sacks as a true freshman.
Pos:
Fierce, explosive linebacker best making plays in the box and up the field. Remains disciplined with assignments and effectively diagnoses the action. Breaks down well and uses his hands to protect himself. Fires up the field to defend the run, sells out on the blitz and wraps up tackling. Flows well to the action, plays with a vicious attitude and attacks opponents. Stacks well against the run, takes good angles to the action and immediately alters his angle of attack to make plays.
Neg:
Smothered by blocks and gets caught up in the trash. Lacks lateral speed. Marginally effective in pursuit.
Analysis:
Avery offers potential as a run-defending, two-down linebacker and will get consideration on the inside of a 3-4 alignment.
