Projected Round
Two-year starter named First Team All-Pac-12 in 2016 after posting 38 tackles (five for loss) and three sacks. Started eight games as a junior and made 26 tackles with 4.5 sacks, missing three games due to an ankle injury.
Explosive interior tackle with scheme versatility. Fires off the snap with an explosive first step, effectively uses his hands to protect himself and slides laterally to make plays against the run. Gives effort, chases the action hard and is relatively effective pursuing to the flanks. Effective rushing the passer, works hard against screen passes and uses his wide body to occupy gaps.
Has a tendency to get tall as the play proceeds. Controlled at the point by a single blocker. Often gives up when he’s out of the action. Must condition himself better.
Qualls showed flashes of dominance and significantly improved his play last season. He offers possibilities as a three-technique tackle or two-gap lineman but is a prospect who must dedicate himself to year-round conditioning and learn to play with consistent leverage.
