Bio:
Two-year starter who caught 15 passes for 244 yards and one touchdown in 2017. Posted nine receptions for 112 yards and four TDs as a junior. Combined to make four catches for 25 yards and one score during his first two seasons at Notre Dame.
Pos:
Underrated tight end with a complete game. Tough blocker who bends his knees, keeps his feet moving and plays with leverage. Strong at the point, quickly gets into blocks and turns defenders from the line. Quick out to the second level and nicely redirects to linebackers to seal them from the action. Effectively uses his hands to separate from defenders and get into pass routes. Shows nice quickness and snatches the ball away from his frame.
Neg:
Was never a big part of the Notre Dame offense. Does not time well in the 40 and plays to that time.
Analysis:
Smythe does not put up big pass-catching numbers but does the little things well. He possesses the skill and ability to be a productive second tight end as a blocker and intermittent pass catcher for a long time to come.
