Three-year starter who was named Mountain West Offensive Player of the Year in both 2015 and 2016. Led the conference in rushing for three straight seasons from 2014-16, racking up 2,133 rushing yards as a senior, 1,653 as a junior and 1,873 as a sophomore, when he earned First Team All-Mountain West honors. Scored 17 touchdowns on the ground in his final two seasons after rushing for 20 scores in 2014. Added 78 receptions for 807 yards and three touchdowns through the air in his final three seasons. Explosive, record-setting running back with poor size and average speed. Plays with tremendous quickness, displays outstanding footwork and makes defenders miss while avoiding piles. Does a great job following blocks, quickly changes direction and loses no momentum altering the angle of runs. Squeezes through the small openings of the offensive line, quickly cuts back against the grain and runs with an aggressive style. Will pick and choose his spots on the inside, has a burst through the hole and keeps his feet moving. Agile, keeps the play in bounds and works to pick up as much yardage as possible. Displays himself as a solid pass catcher out of the backfield.
Small and easily brought down at the point by a single defender. Lacks true breakaway speed. Will not be able to take a pounding at the next level.
Pumphrey was a lethal ball carrier on the college level, taking over games and breaking them wide open. He projects as a third-down back and situational runner in the NFL and will lengthen his next-level career if he proves ability as a return specialist.
