Rankings

Grade
3.27
Projected Round
7-FA
Bio:
Two-year starter who led Missouri with 73 tackles in 2016, including 5.5 for loss, and added three sacks, four pass breakups and a forced fumble. Made 63 tackles (nine for loss) with 2.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and two pass breakups as a junior in 2015. Sophomore totals include 24 tackles (3.5 for loss), one PBU and three quarterback hurries.
Pos:
Underrated weak-side linebacker prospect who displays himself as a three-down defender. Breaks down well, plays with an aggressive style and works hard to get involved in the action. Instinctive, displays good awareness and flows well to the action. Fast, displays speed in pursuit and gets depth on pass drops. Has a burst to the action, goes sideline to sideline and covers a tremendous amount of area on the field. Flashes on the scene and has a burst to the ball handler.
Neg:
Undersized and struggles taking on or shedding blocks. Handled by fullbacks. Not a secure tackler. Marginally forceful on the blitz.
Analysis:
Newsom is one of the more underrated linebackers in this year’s draft, and while he comes with size limitations his speed, resiliency and head for the game could help him land a roster spot as a seventh or eighth linebacker.
