Pos:
Two-year starter who totaled 26 receptions, 569 yards and five TDs in seven games in 2018 before he was lost to a neck injury. Massive receiver who controls the outcome. Possesses a smooth, fluid style and stays low exiting breaks. Effective when he extends his hands and catches the ball away from his frame. Has a tremendous size advantage over opponents, which he consistently uses. Comes back to the ball to make himself an available target, uses his frame to shield away defenders and turns upfield to pick up positive yardage after the catch. Gets vertical in a crowd, comes away with the contested grab and easily high-points the ball over opponents. Tracks the ball in the air, uses his hands and strength to separate from opponents and makes some spectacular catches on occasion. Possesses built-up speed and looks like a runaway locomotive in the open field.
Neg:
Marginal quickness and burst. Must improve his playing balance. Does not show a sense of awareness and lacks timing. Suffered a serious neck injury which ended his season in 2018. Body frame may be too big to play receiver.
Analysis:
Metcalf is a physical specimen and a tremendous athlete but is very raw at the receiver position. He beats down opponents with size, strength and athleticism but must develop into a receiver to be successful at the next level. Metcalf has incredible potential but needs proper coaching and must show no ill effects from his neck injury.
