Two-year starter named Honorable Mention All-Big Ten as both a junior and a senior. Led Michigan with 846 yards and 10 touchdowns on 181 carries in 2016, catching 16 passes for 66 yards. Rushed for 753 yards on 180 carries in 2015 with 19 catches for 159 yards and a score.
Productive college ball carrier with limitations for the next level. Intelligent, shows vision and will pick and choose his spots on the inside. Effectively uses blocks, keeps his feet moving and finds the running lanes. Patient, displays a good initial burst and picks up a lot of yardage off first contact. Displays solid short-area quickness and breaks tackles to pick up extra yardage. Falls forward when tackled. Solid receiver out of the backfield.
Not a creative ball carrier who can make something out of nothing. Lacks the speed and agility to turn the corner. Inconsistent blocker.
Scouts rated Smith as one of the better backs from the senior class entering the season, and after a solid campaign in 2016 he performed well at the Senior Bowl and Shrine Game. Best running downhill, he’s a bit limited but offers possibilities as a rotational ball carrier on Sundays.
