First-year starter who earned First Team All-Big 12 honors and led the conference with six interceptions in 2017, making 63 tackles (8.5 for loss) with 1.5 sacks, a team-high three forced fumbles and nine pass breakups. Made one start and posted 30 tackles (three for loss), one interception, one sack and four PBUs as a sophomore. Missed half of the 2015 season with a foot injury.
Pos:
Large, forceful safety with starting potential at the next level. Properly reads and diagnoses plays, takes correct angles to the action and wraps up tackling. Shows tremendous burst to the ball and brings opponents down in the open field. Plays with suddenness and pops up out of nowhere to make plays. Aggressive, keeps the action in front of him and remains disciplined with assignments. Explosive hitter who accelerates through tackles. Runs downfield with opponents, mixes it up with receivers and positions himself to make plays on the ball. Displays timing and anticipation in pass defense and possesses a quick burst to the ball out of his plant.
Neg:
Late to react on occasion. Marginal force on the blitz. Average ability as a true center fielder.
Analysis:
Elliott burst onto the scene last year after being used as a reserve during his freshman and sophomore campaigns. He possesses the size and skill to line up as a strong safety or in a zone system, and if properly used, Elliott will be a very productive starter in the NFL.
