Bio:
First-year starter who rushed 193 times for 796 yards and seven touchdowns as a senior and earned an invite to the East-West Shrine Game. Named Second Team All-AAC as a returner in 2016 after totaling 231 return yards and a punt-return touchdown, while adding 13 offensive touchdowns and 836 total yards. Ran for 307 yards and a touchdown and caught 25 passes for 346 yards and four scores as a sophomore.
Pos:
Shifty, creative ball carrier with potential as a situational runner at the next level. Quick-footed, sets up defenders and makes them miss. Keeps plays in bounds and works to pick up positive yardage. Displays vision, finds running lanes and shows burst through the hole. Plays with an aggressive style, drives his shoulders through defenders to finish runs and gives effort as a blocker. Easily bounces around piles and picks up yardage when seemingly nothing is available.
Neg:
Shows a bit of indecision carrying the ball. Often runs east and west rather than taking it up the field. Not a big-bodied back who’s going to pick up yardage off initial contact and break tackles. Average production as a pass catcher.
Analysis:
Johnson possesses the underlying skills to be used as a third-down back and situational runner at the next level but must show production as a pass catcher and add return skills to his game.
