Bio:
First-year starter who earned unanimous First Team All-America honors and made 37 tackles with two interceptions and 15 pass breakups as a junior. Recorded 23 tackles and nine PBUs in 2016 while playing behind 2017 first-round picks Marshon Lattimore and Gareon Conley.
Pos:
Slightly undersized but skilled cornerback with terrific upside. Plays with balance and body control and works hard to defend passes. Gets vertical, battles opponents and shows excellent hands for the interception. Mixes it up with opponents throughout their routes, easily runs downfield with receivers and has an explosive burst to the ball. Quickly picks up coverage assignments and tracks the pass in the air. Most effective facing the action.
Neg:
Prefers to side shuffle rather than backpedal.
Analysis:
Ward is an exciting athlete who showed consistent improvement and has starting potential at the next level. The fact that he’s under 6-feet tall will be a problem for some teams, but he’ll be very effective in a system which uses him backed off the line of scrimmage or in a zone system.
