Bio:
Two-year starter who led Ole Miss in tackles in each of his final three seasons with the Rebels. Made 114 tackles (10 for loss) with two sacks and three pass breakups as a senior. Posted 79 tackles (5.5 for loss), two sacks, one forced fumble and two PBU in 2016. Recorded 76 tackles, two forced fumbles and four pass breakups as a sophomore.
Pos:
Productive run-defending linebacker with size limitations. Breaks down well, effectively uses his hands and scrapes well laterally. Fires up the field to defend the run, willingly throws his pads into the pile and sells out on the blitz. Covers a good amount of area on the field and displays good range.
Neg:
Not smooth for a 220-pound linebacker. Hesitant in coverage, does not get depth on drops and displays average ball skills.
Analysis:
Gates was one of the more proficient run-defending linebackers in the SEC but comes with a lack of size and an incomplete game. He could back up on the inside of a 3-4 alignment but must stand out on special teams.
