Bio:
Two-year starter who earned Second Team All-SEC honors and made 53 tackles with one sack and three pass breakups as a junior. Recorded 36 tackles (3.5 for loss) and 1.5 sacks in 2016. Posted 13 tackles, 0.5 sacks and one forced fumble as a true freshman.
Pos:
Physically gifted defensive tackle with an underrated game. Athletic, powerful and versatile. Flashes an explosive first step off the snap, effectively uses his hands and displays good change of direction. Stays with assignments and attracts double and triple teams in the middle of the line but still gets push up the field. Impossible to handle, physically manhandles opponents and can be an overwhelming force. Displays solid change of direction, slides off blocks and makes plays in a variety of ways. Penetrates the line to make tackles, knocks away the pass if he cannot get to the passer and occupies the gaps to allow teammates to make plays on the ball. Caught a touchdown pass last season.
Neg:
More of a small-area lineman and not one who will get outside the box in pursuit. Must consistently play with proper knee bend. Inconsistent off the snap.
Analysis:
Payne played smart, discipline and productive football for Alabama but was never given the credit he’s due. He offers possibilities at nose tackle in a one-gap system or as a conventional defensive tackle and should quickly break into the starting lineup as a rookie.
