Bio:
Three-year starter who earned Second Team AP All-America honors as an all-purpose player and First Team All-Pac-12 honors as a receiver in 2017. Led the nation with four punt return touchdowns and led Washington in receiving with 63 catches for 761 yards and seven TDs. Named Second Team All-Pac-12 as a specialist and returned two punts for scores while catching 53 passes for 822 yards and 15 touchdowns as a junior. Recorded two punt return TDs and made 30 receptions for 414 yards and one score in 2015. Started five games as a true freshman and caught 17 passes for 259 yards and one TD and returned one punt for a touchdown.
Pos:
Reliable receiver who’s also a game-changing return specialist. Fluid releasing off the line of scrimmage, uses his hands to separate from defenders and manufactures ways to come free. Displays terrific hand-eye coordination. Extends and exposes himself to big hits to come away with receptions. Consistent hands catcher with the ability to snatch the ball from the air. Tracks the pass in the air, adjusts and contorts to errant throws and makes difficult receptions. Quick-footed and creative with the ball in his hands, works to pick up yardage after the catch and plays heads-up football.
Neg:
Lacks deep burst and a true second gear. Needs to improve his route running and tends to round off breaks. Not a strong receiver and struggles to come away with contested throws.
Analysis:
Pettis is a solid athlete and polished receiver who will also lend a hand on special teams. He offers possibilities as a third wideout who could line up on the flanks or in the slot and return punts and kicks.
