Bio:
Three-year starter named Honorable Mention All-Big 12 in 2016 after making 67 tackles (3.5 for loss) with one sack and one interception. Suffered a shoulder injury in the first game of the 2015 season and missed the rest of the year. Earned Second Team All-Big 12 honors as a junior in 2014, finishing second on the team with 77 tackles and three interceptions. Picked off a team-high four passes as a sophomore and made 75 tackles (two for loss).
Pos:
Tough, underrated safety at his best making plays downhill. Instinctive, effectively diagnoses the action and plays aggressive. Physical in his all-around game, quickly moves up the field to defend the run and wraps up ball carriers. Forceful, always willing to throw his pads into the pile and a secure open-field tackler.
Neg:
Stiff in his backpedal, lacks great lateral speed and possesses average ball skills. Does not always show good recognition in coverage.
Analysis:
Barnett is one of the better run-defending safeties in this draft yet comes with athletic and coverage limitations. He offers possibilities as a traditional strong safety or in a zone system and he should be an asset on special teams.
