Bio:
Four-year starter who earned First Team All-SWAC honors in each of his final three seasons at Southern. Led the team with three interceptions and added 55 tackles and 12 pass breakups in 2017. Led the SWAC with seven INTs and led Southern with nine PBUs while making 57 tackles as a junior. Led the team with three interceptions and tied for the team lead with seven pass breakups in 2015. Paced Southern with three INTs and 11 pass breakups as a true freshman.
Pos:
Skilled cornerback who’s also a dangerous kick returner. Fluid, quick to transition off the line with opponents and displays great recognition. Rarely challenged by opponents and forces quarterbacks to pull the ball down rather than throw in his direction. Keeps the action in front of him, stays on the receiver’s hip out of breaks and displays excellent hands for the interception. Tracks the pass in the air, displays a sense of timing and has an excellent burst to the ball. Gives effort against the run and willingly throws his pads into the pile.
Neg:
Prefers to side shuffle downfield rather than backpedal. Lack of height is an issue and will cause mismatch problems. Did not stand out during Senior Bowl practices.
Analysis:
Johnson was terrific at the small-school level and has the physical ability and cover skills to be used in dime packages, backed off the line of scrimmage or in zone coverage at the next level.
