Bio:
First-year starter who made 62 tackles (5.5 for loss) with three sacks, seven quarterback hurries and four pass breakups in 2016. Led Alabama with six pass breakups as a junior in 2015, adding 34 tackles and four hurries. Sophomore totals include 22 tackles (5.5 for loss), two sacks and two hurries. Hurt his knee in the first game of his redshirt freshman season and required season-ending surgery.
Pos:
Strong leverage lineman best occupying the gaps. Plays with proper pad level, easily holds the point and rarely gives up an inch to opponents. Fires off the snap, flashes dominant lower-body power and possesses solid change of direction. Quickly locates the ball, works his hands throughout the play and plays through the whistle. Attracts a lot of attention in the middle of the line and occupies double-team blocks.
Neg:
Lacks the ability to immediately alter his angle of attack and struggles redirecting to ball handlers. Poor pass rusher who does not make many plays on the quarterback. Must develop more moves disengaging from blocks.
Analysis:
Tomlinson is a lunch-pail type of defensive lineman who could line up as a 4-3 defensive tackle and even be used in certain two-gap systems. He’s a solid run defender that could eventually develop into a starter at the next level.
