Bio:
Two-year starter who was named Honorable Mention All-Big Ten and made 16 tackles (four for loss) with 3.5 sacks as a senior. Recorded 21 tackles (4.5 for loss) and a half-sack in 2016. Posted 16 tackles (four for loss) and 2.5 sacks as a sophomore.
Pos:
Playmaking defensive lineman with an underrated game. Incredibly explosive and fires off the snap, easily exploits opposing linemen and consistently plays with proper pad level. Effectively uses his hands to protect himself and disengage from blocks, keeps his feet moving and knocks opponents back with a violent punch. Moves well laterally to collapse down the line, shows a burst of closing speed. Consistently focused on by opponents. Attracts double and sometimes triple-team blocks to prevent him from disrupting the action, gives effort and chases hard.
Neg:
Average pass rusher. Marginal production. More of a first-step lineman who cannot get off blocks.
Analysis:
Cothran is an athletic defensive line prospect with outstanding upside potential. He must fill out his frame, get a little stronger and pick up the playmaking productivity, but he deserves to be a late-round choice kept on a roster for future development.
