Bio:
Three-year starter who was named First Team All-AAC in each of his final two seasons at SMU. Finished second on the team with 68 receptions for 1,085 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2017 after leading the team with 76 receptions, 1,246 receiving yards and 10 scores as a sophomore. Caught 49 passes for 862 yards and nine TDs as a redshirt freshman. Played three games for the basketball team in between his freshman and sophomore seasons. Played two games in 2014 before he suffered a season-ending injury and took a medical redshirt.
Pos:
Big-bodied, game-controlling receiver with limited speed. Fights with his hands to separate from defenders, wins out in battles and beats down opponents to come away with receptions. Plays with balance, lays out and extends for difficult grabs and sacrifices his body to make catches. Gets vertical over opponents and pulls the ball from the air like a basketball player pulls down rebounds. Uses his frame as an advantage, adjusts to errant throws and gets down to scoop up low passes. Fluid, smooth and keeps plays in bounds after the catch. Tough to bring down and carries defenders for yards after the catch. Gives effort blocking and gets results.
Neg:
Possesses average quickness. Takes a while to get going and plays to one speed. Unable to improve on his sensational sophomore campaign of 2016.
Analysis:
Sutton has shown consistent progress on the field the past two seasons and is the go-to receiver opponents struggle to stop. His lack of quickness and speed is a concern, but he’s a tall, nice-sized receiver who plays big football and is the very definition of a possession receiver. Sutton is not the fastest athlete but is a polished receiver who does the little things well and should produce as a rookie at the next level.
