Bio:
Three-year starter who earned Second Team All-Pac-12 as both a junior and a senior. Broke into the first unit with seven starts as a sophomore in 2014 and finished with 31 career starts at left tackle.
Pos:
Tall, hard-working tackle with limited upside. Patient in pass protection, stays square and makes good use of angles. Works to bend his knees, effectively fights with his hands and works through the whistle. Explosive at the point, uses body positioning to seal defenders from the play and keeps his head on a swivel.
Neg:
Gets tall as the play proceeds and isn’t a true leverage blocker. Narrow-based blocker who plays off-balance. Must improve his overall playing strength. Very thin in his lower body.
Analysis:
McDermott was a hard-working blocker who got the most out of his ability but must get stronger and start blocking with leverage to have any chance of making a Sunday roster.
