Bio:
Three-year starter at safety who was named Honorable Mention All-Pac-12 in 2016 and 2017. Made 88 tackles (6.5 for loss) with three sacks, one interception and one forced fumble as a senior. Tied for the team lead with two forced fumbles and recorded 44 tackles (four for loss) and one sack as a junior. Posted 70 tackles and two interceptions in 2015. Started the first four games of his redshirt freshman season at cornerback and finished with 32 tackles and one interception.
Pos:
Tough run-defending safety with marginal computer numbers. Effectively reads and diagnoses the action, quickly locates the ball carrier and fires up the field to defend the run. Squares into tackles and brings opponents down at the point of attack. Explosive at the point, sells out on the blitz and shows burst to the ball out of his plant.
Neg:
Lacks great closing and recovery speed. Does not get his head back around in coverage and does a lot of face guarding. Long speed is a concern.
Analysis:
Hawkins was a solid player for USC but is an average athlete with marginal upside for the next level. He offers possibilities as a fourth safety in a zone system but must produce on special teams to make it at the next level.
