Two-year starter who earned Second Team All-American honors as a running back in 2016 after rushing for 1,603 yards and 13 touchdowns and was also named Honorable Mention All-Pac-12 as a returner. Set an NCAA record for all-purpose yardage in a season as a sophomore with 3,864 yards, rushing for 2,019 yards and earning Consensus All-American honors. Accumulated 796 all-purpose yards as a freshman and added two receiving touchdowns. Caught 99 passes for 1,006 yards and 10 touchdowns during his three-year Stanford career.
Explosive skill player with potential at a variety of offensive positions. Displays great patience carrying the ball, waits for blocks to develop and possesses outstanding vision. Squeezes through the small openings of the offensive line, has a burst which he turns on in a single step and plays with both balance as well as body control. Exceptionally quick, makes defenders miss in the open field and at the same time uses an effective straight arm to keep plays alive. Easily changes direction or immediately alters his angle of attack, loses no momentum getting through the cutback lanes and nicely adjusts to the errant throw as a pass catcher. Occasionally lines up in the slot, makes the reception in stride and keeps the play in bounds, running north and south to pick up positive yardage. Possesses soft and strong hands and grabs the ball from the air. Plays with a fearless, reckless style and is always working to make something positive happen.
Lacks true breakaway speed and the second gear. Not a strong ball carrier who’s going to pick up much yardage off initial contact.
McCaffrey is a talented athlete and a productive skill player that presents a real opportunity for creative offensive coordinators. He’s a next-level prospect who can line up in the backfield, be used as a slot receiver and also produce as a return specialist. The versatility to impact games at a variety of positions will be intriguing for NFL teams.
