Bio:
First-year starter who was named Honorable Mention All-Big Ten and made 85 tackles (12 for loss) with three sacks and five pass breakups in 2017. Made one start and recorded 29 tackles (three for loss), two sacks and one forced fumble as a junior.
Pos:
Athletic three-down linebacker who comes off a tremendous senior season. Fires up the field to defend the run, quickly moves laterally and sells out to make plays. Fast out to the flanks, cuts off the corners from ball carriers and smoothly moves in every direction. Remains disciplined with assignments, fluidly changes direction and stays with tight ends and running backs over the middle of the field. Quick to read and diagnose, plays heads-up football and shows a burst of speed to close to the action.
Neg:
Slightly undersized, gets caught up in the trash and needs a free shot to the action. Made minimal impact until his senior season.
Analysis:
Covington was not graded by scouts entering the season but turned in a tremendous senior campaign and now grades as a legitimate last-day pick. He’s a run-and-chase linebacker who can play on all three downs and offer scheme versatility. Covington comes with nice upside due to his athleticism, and if he continues to improve his game he could have a long career at the next level.
