Four-year starter named Second Team All-Pac-12 in 2016 after making 65 tackles (six for loss) with four sacks, an interception and 12 pass breakups. Earned Second Team All-Pac-12 honors as a junior, posting 85 tackles (12 for loss), four sacks, two interceptions and seven pass breakups. Missed the final three games of the 2014 season with a lacerated kidney, totaling 63 tackles. Started seven games as a freshman and made 53 tackles.
Productive and versatile defensive back with starting potential at the next level. Plays with a large degree of quickness and suddenness, has an explosive closing burst and flies around the field to make plays. Quick-footed in reverse, smooth flipping his hips and plays with a good degree of instinct. Locates the ball in the air, shows the ability to recover and has a burst in every direction. Shows good route recognition in zone, explodes to the ball out of his plant and was rarely challenged by opponents. Quick up the field and gives effort defending the run.
Struggles staying on the receiver’s hip out of breaks. Must improve his tackling and be more secure at the point.
Awuzie was a terrific corner college cornerback since his freshman season and has shown progress in his game every year. He offers potential at either corner or safety in a variety of systems and should break into a starting lineup early in his rookie campaign.
