Bio:
Two-year starter who earned Second Team All-Mountain West honors in 2016 after leading Boise State with three interceptions and making 80 tackles (3.5 for loss). Started nine games as a junior, recording 54 tackles (five for loss), one interception and two sacks. Played 10 games and made three starts in 2014 before tearing his ACL late in the season. Tore his other ACL in fall camp before the 2013 season after redshirting in 2012.
Pos:
Underrated safety prospect best between the numbers. Effectively picks up coverage assignments, works well with cornerbacks and consistently puts himself in a position to make plays on the ball. Quick up the field, sells out defending the run and plays heads-up football. Slips blocks to get to the ball carrier and consistently flies around the action, working to make positive plays.
Neg:
Possesses average speed and lateral range. Struggles in man-coverage situations and plays better facing the action.
Analysis:
James was ignored in scouting circles but offers the skill set necessary to line up in dime packages for a zone scheme and also play on coverage units.
