Junior college transfer who started both of his seasons at Ole Miss. Completed 62.5 percent of his passes and threw for 2,758 yards and 19 touchdowns with eight interceptions in nine games in 2016 before a season-ending ACL tear shut him down, but still earned Second Team All-SEC honors. Named Second Team All-SEC as a junior in 2015 after leading the conference with 31 touchdown passes and setting single-season school records with 4,042 passing yards, a 65.1 completion percentage and 41 total touchdowns. Has an assortment of off-field issues, including an arrest for threatening to shoot up a bar after punching a bouncer in 2014.
Productive college signal caller who’s more of a sandlot quarterback. Patient in the pocket, buys time for receivers and keeps his eyes downfield looking for the open wideout. Tough, looks away from covered targets and effectively picks up yardage with his legs when necessary. Remains poised, stands in against the rush and works to make positive plays. Easily gets outside the pocket to make the throw on the move. Consistently challenges in the vertical game and correctly reads defenses for the most part. Takes the safe underneath outlet if nothing else is available. Sits in the pocket and gets clobbered in order to get the ball away.
Late on his throws and has open receivers working hard to make the reception. Scatters his passes about the field. Cannot get the ball downfield. Throws poor corner and fade patterns. Slings the ball from the side and does not have a fluid over-the-top delivery. Has a host of off-field issues and is now coming off a serious injury.
Kelly was tough and productive on the college level but lacks the mechanics and arm strength for Sunday football. He’ll need a lot of work on his game before he’s ready to step under center in the NFL.
