Bio:
Two-year starter who earned First Team All-ACC honors in 2016, making 50 tackles (13.5 for loss) with 10.5 sacks. Named Second Team All-ACC as a junior with 69 tackles (eight for loss) and 3.5 sacks. Redshirted the 2013 season due to injuries sustained in a September car accident.
Pos:
Statistically impressive defensive lineman with an inconsistent game. Fires off the snap, displays tremendous quickness and flashes athleticism. Powerful, busts through double-team blocks and gets behind the line of scrimmage to disrupt the action. Plays with good knee bend, proper pad level and effectively uses his hands to defeat blocks. Stout run defender.
Neg:
More of a downhill lineman. Not quick or fluid if asked to twist or stunt. All too often gets locked up by blockers he should defeat.
Analysis:
At the top of his game Watkins looks and plays like a 2nd day choice but all too often disappears for stretches at a time. He possesses the size and attributes to start in a four-man line but must consistently play at a high level for a long career in the NFL.
