Bio:
Four-year starter limited to seven games as a senior after an early-season ankle injury. Made 28 tackles (three for loss) with one interception, two forced fumbles and six pass breakups in 2015 and led the nation by averaging 18.7 yards per punt return, scoring two touchdowns and setting a Tennessee single-season record with 467 punt return yards. Sophomore totals include 37 tackles (four for loss), three interceptions and 13 pass breakups along with a punt return touchdown. Posted 39 tackles (four for loss), two interceptions and seven pass breakups as a true freshman in 2013.
Pos:
Skilled defensive back with the versatility to line up at cornerback or safety. Smooth pedaling in reverse, fluid flipping his hips and plays faster than his 40 time. Shows the ability to recover from mistakes, displays aggression in all aspects of his game and has a closing burst. Rarely challenged by opponents and does a solid job locking down receivers. Quick up the field defending running plays and screens, wraps up ball carriers and is a secure open-field tackler.
Neg:
Occasionally bites on receivers’ moves and blows coverage assignments. Struggles making plays with his back to the ball. Not forceful on the blitz.
Analysis:
Sutton had been a consistent cornerback for Tennessee prior to his injury, then showed the ability to play safety during Senior Bowl practices. He’s a solid three-down player most effective in a zone system or backed off the line of scrimmage where he’s facing the action.
