Pos:
Skilled cornerback with a nose for the football. Engages receivers at the line of scrimmage, quickly flip his hips in transition and plays physical football. Possesses outstanding instincts, has a great sense of what's happening on the field and locates the pass in the air. Consistently positions himself to defend the throw, displays outstanding ball skills and shows great hands for the interception. Stays on the receiver’s hip out of breaks, has an explosive burst to the ball and constantly finds ways to knock the pass away. Quickly makes his way up the field to defend the run.
Neg:
Seems to get confused in zone coverage and misreads routes and assignments. Short and comes with a size disadvantage. Ran poorly at the combine after he added almost 15 pounds of bulk.
Analysis:
Without a doubt, Murphy is the most polished cornerback in this year’s draft and has better ball skills than anyone at the position. The fact that he's under six feet tall will be a concern to number of teams in addition to his weight gain prior to the combine. In the end, Murphy is a terrific cornerback who should quickly break into a starting lineup.
