Bio:
Three-year starter who earned Consensus First Team All-American honors from the NCAA in 2016 after making 71 tackles (10 for loss) with three sacks, two interceptions and six pass breakups. Named First Team All-Pac-12 as a sophomore, posting 49 tackles (1.5 for loss), two interceptions and seven pass breakups. Started every game as a freshman in 2014, receiving Freshman All-American recognition and recording 80 tackles (two for loss), one sack, one interception and two forced fumbles.
Pos:
Explosive safety with a complete game. Smart and disciplined but at the same time very tough. Instinctive, quick to read and diagnose the action and quickly picks up coverage assignments. Displays a burst to the action, possesses solid ball skills and shows a nice move to the throw. Fast moving in every direction, quick arriving on the scene and plays with a large degree of suddenness. Effectively times his pass defenses, gets vertical and contorts to come away with the difficult interception. Breaks down well, effectively uses his hands to protect himself and slides off blocks to get to the play. Runs downfield with receivers then gets his head back around and tracks the pass in the air. Displays outstanding range in center field. Willingly defends the run and lays it on the line. Consistently tries to strip the ball and goes for the turnover.
Neg:
Small. Gets out-positioned by bigger receivers and tight ends. Not a secure open-field tackler.
Analysis:
Baker is a tremendous football player and an outstanding athlete with size limitations. He’s a true center fielder who can also play over the slot receiver and has all the tools necessary to start for a team willing to overlook his lack of height.
