Two-year starter who led Abilene Christian with 10 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks and made 35 tackles with three pass breakups in 2017. Named Honorable Mention All-Southland and led the team with six sacks and three PBUs while adding 64 tackles (7.5 for loss) and one forced fumble as a junior. Started three games and posted a team-high eight tackles for loss, 32 tackles and one sack in 2015. Made one start as a true freshman and recorded 11 tackles.
Athletic linebacker with next-level size and speed who primarily lined up at defensive end in college. Fires off the snap with a quick first step and plays with proper pad level. Easily moves about the field, nicely redirects to the action and immediately alters his angle of attack and has a closing burst. Effectively reads and diagnoses and quickly locates the ball. Uses his hands to protect himself, pursues quickly down the line of scrimmage and plays to his 40 time.
Lacks bulk. Slow to get off blocks and gets engulfed at the point. Gets caught up in the trash.
Gates was an undersized defensive end who occasionally stood up over tackle and showed ability in space. He has the size and skill to develop into a 3-4 outside linebacker and should be given practice-squad consideration this summer.
