Bio:
Three-year starter who made 83 tackles (seven for loss) with one sack and five pass breakups in 2016. Posted 120 tackles (eight for loss) and 1.5 sacks as a junior in 2015. Sophomore totals include 72 tackles (5.5 for loss), two interceptions, two forced fumbles and five pass breakups in 11 games, as he missed two contests due to a knee injury. Started the final four games as a true freshman in 2013 and made 33 tackles (two for loss).
Pos:
Tough, resilient linebacker with average next-level speed. Instinctive, quick up the field and intense. Stout defending the run, breaks down well and effectively uses his hands. Remains disciplined, keeps the action in front of him and covers a good amount of area on the field. Goes sideline to sideline, plays faster than his 40 time and is effective in pursuit. Fires through the gaps up the field and wraps up tackling. Flashes ability in space.
Neg:
Displays an average closing burst. Lacks long speed.
Analysis:
Ellis is a hard-working, two-down defender who gets the most from his ability and makes plays with his head as much as his physical skills. He’d be a terrific addition at middle or inside linebacker and is a prospect who comes with a special-teams mentality.
