Two-year starter who was named Honorable Mention All-Big Sky in 2016 and was given Montana's 2016 Steve Carlson MVP Award. His 2,785 passing yards as a senior ranked 16th in Montana single-season history and his 25 touchdowns ranked 11th. Finished his career with 427 completions on 686 attempts for 4,769 yards, 37 touchdowns and 17 interceptions.
Tall, strong-armed pocket passer with an underrated game. Sells ball fakes, displays excellent pocket presence and does a terrific job consistently finding open wideouts. Leads receivers with passes and allows them to pick up big yardage running after the catch. Remains poised under pressure, withstands the rush and gets rid of the ball with a flick of his wrist. Makes good decisions and does not force the ball into covered targets. Throws excellent fade and corner routes. Easily gets the ball downfield even off his back foot. Uses all his targets and to his credit takes the safe underneath outlet if his primary receiver is covered. Displays a sense of timing and accuracy and does not have receivers waiting on the ball.
Struggles sensing backside pressure. Often high of the mark when he misses on throws. Has a long overhand motion. Stares down receivers on occasion.
Gustafson is a big, strong-armed passer who was productive the two seasons he started for Montana. He’s a classic pocket passer who must become more authoritative on the field but is a solid developmental prospect.
