Two-year starter at left tackle who made 19 consecutive starts before a leg injury kept him out against Nebraska. Started 27 of his final 28 college games.
Tough, intelligent tackle with limited athleticism. Quickly sets up off the snap, stays square and keeps defenders away. Makes outstanding use of angles, body positioning and seals opponents from the play. Effective with his hands and turns opponents from the action. Sets with a wide base, patient in pass protection and stays with assignments.
At times does a bit of clutching and grabbing. Lacks strength in his base, struggles finishing blocks and overwhelmed on occasion. Limited to a small area.
Schmidt was an efficient college lineman who got the most from his ability but comes with limited upside. His approach and wherewithal could make him an inexpensive backup at tackle or guard.
