Bio:
Three-year starter who missed two games with a clavicle injury in 2017 and returned to a reduced role to finish the season, totaling 261 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 67 carries and catching 25 passes for 541 yards and two scores. Led the team in rushing during his sophomore and junior seasons, combining for 1,507 yards on the ground and 11 TDs and catching 70 passes for 738 yards. Started twice as a true freshman in 2014 and racked up 343 yards from scrimmage.
Pos:
Undersized ball carrier who projects as a situational runner at the next level. Patiently waits for blocks to develop, displays smooth change-of-direction skills and loses no momentum altering the angle of runs. Displays vision, finds running lanes and keeps his feet moving on contact. Effectively sets up defenders and makes them miss. Terrific pass catcher out of the backfield who makes receptions with his hands away from his frame.
Neg:
Lacks size. Easily taken down by a single defender. Gives effort blocking but gets annihilated at the point of attack. Lacks the speed to run to daylight.
Analysis:
Newsome was very productive for Connecticut but is an undersized prospect who must stand out as a pass catcher and return specialist this summer.
