Bio:
Three-year starter who made 33 tackles (5.5 for loss) with four sacks and one forced fumble as a junior. Earned Second Team All-SEC honors and led LSU with 14.5 tackles, 12 sacks and three forced fumbles while making 56 tackles in 2016. Started the final nine games of his true freshman season and recorded 41 tackles (6.5 for loss) and five sacks.
Pos:
Sometimes game-changing pass rusher with major off-field concerns. Athletic, moves well in every direction and covers a lot of area on the field. Breaks down well and bends his knees. Easily changes direction and immediately alters his angle of attack to get to the action. Works his hands, plays with excellent balance and shows the fluidity to get outside the numbers in pursuit of the action. Does not bite on ball fakes and does more than just pin his ears back and rush up the field. Explosive off the edge and displays a solid closing burst. Relatively effective dropped off the line of scrimmage and plays well in space.
Neg:
Doesn’t have a physical nature to his game. Out-positioned from the action and shows little in the way of playing strength. Prefers to sidestep or run around blocks rather than meet them head-on. Easily disrupted from his angle of attack by the initial hit. Saw a significant weight gain prior to his junior season. Multiple questions about off-field character must be answered.
Analysis:
Key has displayed himself as a game-changing pass rusher at the top of his game, but he’s also been inconsistent in in all areas. If he’s focused on football and the task at hand, he will be a productive starter at the next level, otherwise we could be looking at the next Randy Gregory.
