Bio:
First-year starter who earned First Team All-Conference USA honors in 2016 after leading the nation with 27 rushing touchdowns and finishing second in C-USA with 1,621 yards on 237 rushes while adding 30 receptions for 323 yards and two scores. A torn hamstring cost Wales the first three games of the 2015 season, but he still led the Hilltoppers with 1,091 rushing yards on 155 carries and added nine touchdowns to earn Second Team All-Conference USA. Rushed 82 times for 518 yards and five scores as a sophomore in a change-of-pace role.
Pos:
Super-productive ball carrier also effective catching the ball out of the backfield. Quick, agile and possesses both vision as well as running instincts. Will pick and choose his spots on the inside, does a great job following blocks and squirts through small openings on the field. Patient, runs with an aggressive style and keeps his feet moving on contact. Quick-footed with the ability to immediately cut back against the grain and loses no momentum changing direction. Effective when he extends to make the reception away from his frame.
Neg:
One-speed ball carrier who cannot beat defenders into the open field. Not going to break tackles or pick up much yardage off initial contact. Loses his focus and concentration as a pass catcher.
Analysis:
Wales turned in a career campaign after taking over the starting job at Western Kentucky last season. He’s a versatile back who comes with poor size and speed numbers, yet his ability to create yardage and catch the ball out of the backfield makes him a legitimate contender as a third-down back.
