Pos:
Large, physical defender who has shown consistent improvement throughout his career. Starts with excellent knee bend, plays with terrific lean and displays strength in his lower body with the ability to bull rush opponents off the line of scrimmage. Possesses a solid first step, quickly gets his hands up and effectively uses them to protect himself or disengage from blocks. Rarely off his feet, shows good change of direction and nicely redirects to the play. Plays within himself and the system. Vicious, explosive and attacks assignments. Tested extremely well during the Combine.
Neg:
More of a loping athlete who isn’t a quick-twitch pass rusher. Lacks overall explosiveness. Must physically fill out. Struggled in pass-rushing drills during Senior Bowl practices.
Analysis:
Nelson caught my eye during his sophomore campaign due to his length and ability to force the action. I like him best as a conventional defensive tackle or at end in a two-gap system and believe Nelson is best occupying blockers, although he can make the occasional play behind the line of scrimmage. If he translates the athleticism, he showed during the combine into playmaking ability, Nelson could turn into a dominant lineman at the next level.
