Bio:
Three-year starter who made 34 tackles with one interception as a senior. Played one game during the 2016 season after returning from an upper-body injury and made five tackles. Earned Second Team All-NEC and tied for the team lead with three interceptions while adding 62 tackles, one forced fumble and eight PBUs as a junior. Recorded 74 tackles and three INTs as a sophomore.
Pos:
One-time highly regarded safety who comes off two injury-plagued seasons. Aggressive, keeps the action in front of him and remains disciplined with assignments. Fluid flipping his hips, locates the pass in the air and takes proper angles to the action. Instinctive and quickly reads and diagnoses plays. Effectively quarterbacks the secondary. Lays out or dives around the field to make plays and wraps up tackling.
Neg:
Has a long injury history that will raise red flags. Displays average quickness and little burst.
Analysis:
Smigiera displayed himself as a consistent and complete safety on film, but his career has been marred by injuries that sapped his athleticism. If he passes medicals, Smigiera offers opportunities as a ninth defensive back in a zone system.
