Bio:
Three-year starter who earned Third Team All-ACC honors and made 92 tackles (11.5 for loss) with 3.5 sacks, one interception, one forced fumble and seven pass breakups in 2017. Named Second Team All-ACC and led the Hokies with 114 tackles (5.5 for loss) as a junior, adding two sacks, three interceptions, one forced fumble and four PBUs. Posted 73 tackles, a team-high 11.5 tackles for loss, four sacks, three forced fumbles and one INT in 2015. Made 54 tackles (four for loss) with two sacks as a redshirt freshman.
Pos:
Undersized run-and-chase linebacker who gets the most from his ability. Remains disciplined with assignments, takes good angles to the action and scrapes well laterally. Explosive, pursues the play with speed and covers a lot of area on the field. Outstanding in pursuit, displays tremendous quickness and plays tough, smart football. Throws his body around the field and works to make positive plays.
Neg:
Lacks bulk and struggles getting off blocks. Easily handled at the point. Lack of height will result in coverage mismatches at the next level.
Analysis:
Despite four years of terrific production at Virginia Tech, Motuapuaka has never been highly thought of in scouting circles. He’s an explosive sideline-to-sideline linebacker who gets the most from his ability and has all the elements necessary to back up on the inside of a 3-4 alignment and play special teams.
