Bio:
One-year starter who missed most of his senior season after suffering a knee injury, posting 21 tackles and one interception in the two games he played. Made 12 starts in 2016 and was named Honorable Mention All-ACC after finishing second on the team with 113 tackles (six for loss) and adding one sack and one forced fumble. Played in the middle and on the strong side as a true freshman and racked up 53 tackles, one sack, one forced fumble and one interception.
Pos:
Explosive and swift linebacker returning from a knee injury. Displays good change of direction, quickly gets out to the flanks and shows ability in pursuit. Breaks down well, flows to the play and shows a good head for the ball in run defense. Has a stout build and stacks well against the run. Does not bite on play-action passes and remains disciplined with assignments.
Neg:
Really wasn’t fast before his knee injury. Lacks great size and gets caught up in the trash. Average skill in coverage.
Analysis:
We graded Smith as a potential mid-round choice entering the 2017 campaign, but his season was cut short by a knee injury. He’s now a medical risk who must prove he’s healthy and show some versatility but is worth consideration in the late rounds.
