Bio:
Junior college transfer who became a two-year starter with the Buffaloes. Earned Second Team All-Pac-12 honors in 2016 after leading the nation with 21 pass breakups, adding 23 tackles and an interception. Made 36 tackles with two interceptions and three pass breakups as a junior. Struggled with a back injury at the beginning of his sophomore season. Started at least eight games at both left and right cornerback.
Pos:
Underrated cornerback prospect coming off a terrific season. Displays good awareness, consistently tracks the pass in the air and shows a nice sense for what’s happening on the field. Runs downfield with opponents, gets his head back around and aggressively works to defend throws. Keeps the action in front of him, mixes it up with opponents and defends well against screen passes and the run.
Neg:
At times does more knocking down ball carriers rather than wrapping up. Needs to improve his fundamentals.
Analysis:
Entering the season Witherspoon was ignored by scouts, but he turned in a terrific campaign and is now poised to be a second-day draft pick. He possesses the size and speed to develop into a starter if he continues to progress on the field.
